OLD DOGS/NEW TRICKS

Published by

Many years ago I was dialed into an inspirational teacher by the name of Earl Nightengale. He told a story about a friend that complained that all this new fangdangled stuff was hard to learn. He was saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. This was 40 years ago, I have to wonder what he would be saying now with the rapid rate of change.

What is most important is the response that Mr. Nightengale gave the man. He said “Human beings are not dogs and knowledge is not a bag of tricks.” Wow! Thank you Earl Nightengale for this wise redirect.

You guessed it. This post was inspired by the delivery of my new HP computer. I must admit I am also humbled by the task of setting it all up. I am blessed to have two children and a bunch of very savvy grandchildren who can easily help me.

When I ask for their help, two important things occur: one, I am filled with Hope because they are very smart, and second, without preaching a word, they realize that this 75-year-old man isn’t just sitting on the front porch waiting to die; he is launching a new project.

I am admittedly a serial Optimist but I think that the profound change this Covid 19 has created will provide a spring board for a ton of new learning. It may seem scary at times, and it is, but we have two choices, learn or perish.

I talk frankly with my kids and Grandkids about the possibilities that come from this seemingly catastrophic circumstance. It is through this connection that we convey our message that they also have the ability, the gumption, the spirit to make some really good Lemonade out of this bitter piece of fruit we have been handed.

Thank You for being Caring Grandparents and for Teaching them Well!
