Be a Good Seer and a Good Sayer: How Your Words Shape Your Grandchildren

As grandparents, we hold a quiet superpower that most of us underestimate. We have a front-row seat to the growing years of the people we love most, and our words carry real weight. When we catch our grandchildren doing something that challenges them, something kind, something brave, something generous, and we say it out loud, we are doing more than giving a compliment. We are etching that behavior into who they believe they are.

Watch the video: In The Cool Grandpa Podcast, Episode 201 – Good Seer, Good Sayer, Neil shares the emotional moment of becoming a grandfather for the first time and how that experience shaped his entire philosophy around connection. He talks about non-judgmental listening, creating emotional safety, and why the simple act of truly seeing a child, and then saying what you see, can change the trajectory of a relationship. It is a nine-minute watch that will stay with you.

Make Them Feel Safe

Not every grandchild is a high achiever or a natural striver. But every single one of them is lovable, and every single one of them needs to feel safe. That is our job. Not to push, not to fix, but to make them feel safe in our presence. I texted my 16-year-old granddaughter one Friday afternoon: “Just thought about you. That made me smile.” Two lines. No agenda. She knew she mattered. That is Good Saying in its simplest form.

Being a Good Seer means paying close attention, not just watching, but truly noticing. It means looking for the moments that reveal character:

  • Empathy in action: When a grandchild comforts a sibling or a friend, name it. “I saw what you did for her. That was kind.”

  • Persistence under pressure: When they keep trying after a tough moment, say it. “You didn’t quit. I noticed that.”

  • Generosity: When they share without being asked, tell them. “That was generous. That’s who you are.”

  • Courage: When they try something scary, acknowledge the attempt. “You were brave today.”

My world is genuinely brighter when I am Good Seeing. And it spreads love when I am Good Saying. These are not complicated techniques. They are small, intentional moments that add up to a lifetime of connection.

Thank you for being a Caring Grandparent.
