However, many grandparents have taken the grandchildren into their homes. This changes things a great deal and the changes are not always for the better.
Reports say the 2.4 million grandparents are exercising their grandparents rights in raising their grandchildren. There are many reasons why this can happen such as death of the parents, legal problems for the parents such as drug abuse or being put in jail, and many other situations.
No matter what the reason, many of the grandparents end up with the negative results. What happens is that the grandparents take their grandchildren in thinking that they can have the same relationship, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. The grandchildren may end up hating the fact that they have to live with their grandparents for one reason or another.
The transition from living with parents to living with grandparents is difficult to some children. Many experts liken the transition to a type of culture shock for the grandchildren especially if they are older children. One of the biggest problems is the gap in age. Grandchildren do not understand the lifestyle of their grandparents and vice versa .
Most grandparents do not know what a video game is, and although they know that you can make a call on a cell phone they don’t know a thing about texting. No matter how much the grandparents try– and how good their intentions are– it is sometimes impossible to bridge the generation gap with their grandchildren.
If you are a grandparent that is raising your grandchildren and having difficulty, do not lose hope! There are groups and organizations that can help you get on a level playing field with your grandchildren. Some of these groups are teen parenting classes, churches, children services and there is now a national committee being formed. These groups can teach you how to communicate with your grandchildren and even teach you about the technology that they are all so interested in using.
You should also make sure you utilize resources like The Custody Center to know and understand your legal rights. You should hope for the best, but if conflict comes– from your grandkids or your own children– you need to be aware of what grandparents rights are available to you. The Custody Center can help you understand these things and put you on solid ground
In these situations we always hope for the best, but emotions and miscommunication can make things hard. Go to The Custody Center or some other grandparents rights resource today and make sure you have the knowledge you need to know your custody rights are being protected.
