As a grandparent, finding out that your child is getting divorced can be a reason for many worries. As custody and visitation rights for the parents are decided you must sit on the sidelines and watch as very important relationships in your life are worked out by others. It can be frustrating and frightening not to know what kind of access you will have to your grandchildren after years of seeing them regularly.
When going through such a scenario you probably have a lot of questions. Often we don’t think about our own grandparents rights until the time comes that they are tested. You may find yourself wondering just what your rights are, and how you can get them recognized if necessary.
In many situations like this visitation with your grandchildren can be worked out informally without involving lawyers or the courts. This is not true about every case, however. You may have to insist that your rights as a grandparent are considered.
One way to quickly become better informed is to pick up a copy of my book No Greater Loss in which I go into great detail about the issues surrounding grandparents rights. Then after you are more familiar with these issues you might even want to contact me directly for advice, or seek out a lawyer to help you on your cases. In any event, the first step is always to become informed on this complex issue.
