BEYOND GRANDPARENTS VISITATION

Grandparents rights in many states will place them in a position to be care givers for their grandchildren.  Grandparents custody is on the rise these days. this may be due to a divorce, death or even financial problems.   There are many reasons for this happening.  There is a lot of happiness in raising grandchildren but also many problems come about along the way.  To get additional help with health care, finances and schooling you need to learn about the laws in your state.  Every state has their own set of laws.  Some states require that you adopt, have custody or are a legal guardian of your grandchildren to get the assistance that you need.  When you have children come to live with you, certain things will change.  If you live in a small house or apartment, you may need to upgrade your home to have the additional space that you need.  Make sure you check over the laws when you go to enroll your grandchildren for school. You may have to have legal custody or guardianship to have them enrolled.

Your grandchildren’s health is very important.  They need to see a doctor for regular checkups. Some children have additional health problems that require special medical attention. Your state may be able to help you cover health expenses through Medicaid.  Remember it is also very important to take care of yourself as well with your grandchildren relying on you to be around for them.  When having to communicate with birth parents you may have bad feeling towards them depending on what has happened.   It is best to try to get along with them for your grandchildren.  Try to keep communication going with the parents.  This will make the situation easier for everyone.  The court will provide visitation that will need to be followed.

Even though the grandparents may have custody, the grandchildren may worry and think a lot about their parents.  Some children even blame themselves for what has happened to their parents.  It is good to sit down and talk with your grandchildren to help them better understand that it is not their fault and assure them that you are going to be there for them.  Treat your grandchildren well and make sure they know you love them and enjoy your time with them.
