Sunrise is a place to begin each day. What an appropriate photo for this article from near my home in Eastern North Carolina.
I write these articles to share the wisdom of the ages and highlight the knowledge of the credible helpers of our time. Many of those knowledgeable folks are concerned about the amount and tone of what our youth are currently hearing and internalizing. I feel it is our duty as influential and caring adults to help them process all of this in a way that offers Hope and a sense of security in these intense times. I call it balance.
There are at the least two proactive things we can do as Grandparents that others can’t, that is to allay some of their fears, spoken and internalized. As I have written about in previous articles, our first step is to ask them what their perception is. What do they think of all of this “STUFF”. Let them know they have a unique perspective that you really want to hear about. My method is quite simple. I first ASK and then hush up. If they are slow to respond I do all I can to make them feel that what I want to hear from them is important to me so I ASK again without editorial. I am an active listener so I nod and smile, etc. while they have the floor.
The other thing we can do is to seek out and share stories of, what Mr. Roger’s Mom called “The Helpers”. Let them know that many people are doing wonderful work and acts of kindness in so many ways. Stories that serve to restore their Faith in humanity. This is especially important. Faith leads to Hope, Fear leads to Hate. I know you hope for the best for your Grands and so do I.
Thank You for being Caring Grandparents
